Abstract
Automatic speaker recognition (ASR) systems are making rapid advances, as is evident from their increasing presence in our everyday lives. In controlled experiments ASR systems can now attain almost perfect performance in classifying voice samples by speaker. In some countries ASR evidence is used as forensic evidence in court to address questions of speaker identity. Are we therefore approaching the point where forensic phoneticians are no longer needed? Is the forensic phonetician a dead clade walking (a term used to describe species that face extinction)? Spoiler: no.
