Abstract
This talk outlines my experiences working on te reo Māori ( the language of the indigenous people of New Zealand) for the last 19 years. In the first half of the talk I will speak about the some of the phonetic findings from the MAONZE corpus, a corpus of over 60 bilingual speakers of Māori and New Zealand English whose birthdates span over 100 years. In the second half of the talk I will talk about how we transferred our phonetic findings and expertise on to various speech technology projects involving te reo Māori. I will also touch on how data sovereignty is one of our core values.
